The case against the sugar: Sugar and its crime.

Ever wondered how refined sugar and processed can cause damage. More or less sugar is sugar and it does affect negatively. Read more to know more.

Before sugar was invented way back in the 1800’s there was no case of obesity or diabetes. Slowly sugar has made its way into most of our food products like cereals, sauces, peanut butter, jams, chocolates, ketchups, breads and bakery, ready to eat food, noodles, sweets, gravies, donuts, teas, coffee, juices, sodas, health drinks, namkeen, refined flour (maida).  The list is endless. It has become part of all our packaged food and went unnoticed.

We don’t need sugar for our body as it’s just empty calories. Only calories and zero nutrients. Yet, once we taste sugar, it becomes inseparable from our daily life. Sugar is an addictive substance just like any drugs like opioids. It stimulates the same reward system of the brain as does the opioid. It is one of the main culprit of the many fancy named diseases we have today.

Here I put my case against the sugar

Case 1: Causes weight gain:

Sugar spikes the blood sugar levels and hence raises the insulin hormone responsible for stabilising blood sugar levels and fat production. Also sugar can cause resistance to leptin (hormone that suppresses hunger) which in turn can increase your hunger pangs and food cravings. It also cause inflammation which is the reason for insulin resistance causing diabetes and heart diseases.

Case 2 :Causes Skin aging

No amount of anti-aging cream can protect you from wrinkles if your choices of food are poor. Food with high refined carbohydrates and sugar can cause skin aging faster. Sugar and proteins in the body react to produce advanced glycated end products (AGE). This AGE can cause accelerated skin aging.

CASE 3: Causes Skin Acne

Eating more sugar rich food can raise blood sugar levels which can increase insulin levels. High insulin levels can cause increased secretion of testosterone production which results in skin acne and more secretion of oil production.

CASE 4: Causes Poor Gut Microbiome

Increased sugar intake can cause a decrease in good bacteria in your GUT. This in turn can lead to an imbalance in gut health causing more sugar cravings. Also more sugar in your diet can cause gut inflammation which can lead to resistance to insulin (remember the hormone that balances blood sugar)

CASE 5: Causes Fatty Liver

Eating too much especially as fructose can cause fatty liver. Fructose in fruits are the natural sugars with fibre hence does not cause health problems. The sugar present in packaged food products contain high fructose corn syrup which is digested only in liver which stores as fat causing fatty liver.

CASE 6:Cause Metabolic Aging

We have something called telomeres responsible for genetic information. They prevent cells from aging. As we grow older, shortening of telomeres and death of cells is a natural process. However, if your diet is high in sugar and refined carbohydrates this process can be fastened.
